런던에서 예정된 공연 일정의 마지막이다. 출국 전에, 런던에서 마지막으로 내가 있고 싶을 곳이 어딜까 고민을 많이 했다. 특별한 곳을 가야하나, 멀리 가야할까 아니면 집에서 짐을 싸며 정리를 할까... 그래도 어차피 집에서 쉬느니 공연이라도 보고 오는 편이 좋다고 생각했다. 내가 제일 좋아했던 사우스뱅크센터에서 시간을 보내는게 결국 가장 현명한 선택이었다. 비가 오는 날이었구나, 아아 그 날이 기억 난다. 장우산을 사서 Embankment역까지 걸었다. 그렇게 마지막으로 런던을 구경했다.

런던에 와서 들은 연주 중 바실리 페트렌코의 지휘가 가장 마음에 들었다.

 

 

프로그램 Sergey Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.4 (original vers.) Interval Dmitry Shostakovich Symphony No.4 in C minor

Vasily Petrenko contrasts Shostakovich with Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.4 played by Alexander Ghindin.

By the mid-1930s the Soviet regime had positioned itself in direct opposition to Shostakovich's work. Yet during this period the composer gave birth to one of his most unusual symphonies. Deeply personal, Mahler-inspired sentiments were spiked by grotesque marches and gallops. Shostakovich knew he was headed for trouble and withdrew the piece before its premiere, only conceding at its eventual performance in 1961 that it 'stood much higher than my recent [symphonies]'.

The imposing Fourth Symphony is heard tonight after Rachmaninoff's exalted Fourth Piano Concerto, played in its original uncut version by the outstanding Alexander Ghindin.
